Aloe vera helps to keep skin hydrated, as it acts as a protective layer on the skin and helps replenish its moisture.

Argan oil is expressed from the kernels of argan trees and is also known as ‘liquid gold'. Argan oil contains beneficial lipids and fatty acids, such as oleic acid, palmitic acid, and linoleic acid. It is also a source of vitamin E (tocopherol) and other antioxidants. Argan oil has healing properties and deeply moisturizes skin and hair.

Beeswax forms a protective layer on the skin that protects against environmental irritants. This natural barrier prevents water loss and helps to keep skin soft and hydrated. Beeswax is different from other occlusive ingredients as it allows the skin to breathe and does not clog pores.

Bergamot oil is extracted from the rinds of citrus fruit that grow on the bergamot orange tree and has antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. The complex citrus scent of bergamot is used in aromatherapy to reduce anxiety and stress as it has an uplifting effect on the mood.

Boabab is also referred to as the ‘tree of life', because a single tree may live for over 500 years. The seeds of the Baobab fruit produce a precious antioxidant-rich oil with omega-3,-6, and -9 fatty acids that help hydrate and lock in moisture in even the driest skin. It is high in linoleic acid, a kind of omega-3 fatty acid that has anti-inflammatory properties. It is not only rich in antioxidants but also contains more vitamin C than most other fruits. This together with the oil's omega fatty acid content it makes Baobab a natural collagen booster for the skin.

Centella asiatica is a plant also known as Gotu kola or by its nickname tiger grass. It is a herb used for centuries in traditional Chinese medicine and got its nickname when people in China discovered that tigers would roll around in to help heal their wounds. Studies prove its effectiveness in wound healing and prevention of scarring, as it increases skin cell regeneration and collagen production. Centella asiatica inhibits the inflammatory phase of scarring, helping to prevent and reduce the appearance of scars and stretch marks. Moreover, it reduces skin irritation by repairing the skin barrier function and relieves itchy skin due to its soothing properties.

Cetearyl alcohol is a type of fatty alcohol, made from the fats of vegetable oils. Although it is called an 'alcohol', it is gentle on the skin and makes skin and hair soft and supple. It is a common emulsifier used to thicken and stabilizes a product formula.

Chaparral is a flowering herb and has been used as a herbal medicine for centuries. The topical application of Chaparral promotes the healing of skin conditions such as minor wounds, infections, eczema, psoriasis, and contact dermatitis.

Citric acid is derived from citrus fruits and helps to balance the pH level of a product, preventing it from being too alkaline or basic.

There are two types of coconut oil, virgin coconut oil and refined coconut oil. We only use cold-pressed virgin coconut oil in our products, as this has the most nutrients and antioxidants that benefit the skin. Virgin coconut oil is a rich source of medium-chain fatty acids or ‘healthy fats’ that repair the natural skinbarrier, keeping skin feeling soft and smooth.

It has antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and antifungal properties, and protects delicate skin from germs, rashes and improves healing of skin that suffers from eczema.

Virgin coconut oil has a melting point of around 24-26 °C and can become solid at room temperature. Should your Karma Mama product that contains coconut oil become solid then warm it in the palm of your hands before use.

Evening primrose, also called ‘evening star’, is a plant with flowers that only open in the evening. The oil extracted from the seeds has many benefits for the health of the kin. The key ingredients include fatty acids such as stearic acid and linoleic acid that support the natural function of the skin barrier, preserving water in the epidermis and regulating sebum production. Evening primrose oil moisturises, soothes and enhances the texture and elasticity of the skin.

Glycerin is a sugar alcohol that can be derived from animal products, petroleum or plants. We only use plant-derived glycerin, which is made from plant oils. Glycerin is a super powerful humectant, capable of retaining and attracting moisture into the skin. It is a substance that also occurs naturally in the upper layer of the skin and is important for the hydration of the skin. Glycerin helps improve the skin barrier and moisturizes the skin deeply.

Glyceryl Stearate is a fatty acid derived from vegetable oil. Glyceryl Stearate is a widely used emollient that helps bind moisture in the skin and keeps our product formulas nicely blended.

Guar hydroxypropyltrimonium chloride is derived from guar also known as the cluster bean. It is a great conditioning agent for both skin and hair, but it is especially beneficial in hair products as it neutralizes the negative charges on hair strands that cause hair to become static or tangled.

Olive oil is not only a healthy choice for your diet, but for your skin as well. It is a nutrient-rich oil packed with vitamins and antioxidants. Olive oil helps to lock in moisture in the skin and helps to increase the water content of the skin. Opuntia streptacantha is a plant of the cactus family. The cactus fig (prickly pear) has a wide range of benefits for both hair and skin. It is extremely rich in essential fatty acids, and the natural antioxidant vitamin E. Prickly Pear intensively moisturises and has softening properties.

Potassium Cocoyl Glycinate is a coconut-based cleansing agent. It is extremely mild and produces a rich and creamy foam without drying or irritating the skin. It is the perfect alternative for harsh foaming agents such as sulphates (SL/SLES).

Rice bran oil is extracted from the outer layers of the rice grain (the bran). The cold-pressed oil contains vitamin B, vitamin E, squalene and fatty acids. It has many beneficial properties and mainly soothes, hydrates and keeps the skin smooth. Rice bran wax is a vegan alternative to beeswax, and we use it in some of our products to give it a more solid texture.

Safflower oil is a botanical oil pressed from the seeds of the Carthamus tinctorius or Safflower, which contains beneficial antioxidants and fatty acids such as linolenic acid. Safflower oil hydrates and balances dry or acne-prone skin and reduces the first signs of ageing.

Shea butter is a natural fat extracted from the nuts of the Shea tree, also known as the Karite tree. It is a rich source of antioxidants and skin-replenishing fatty acids such as linoleic and oleic acid. Shea butter helps restore the natural skin barrier,  improves elasticity and prevents dryness.

Sunflower oil contains a high level of linoleic acid, a fatty acid that occurs naturally in the sebum on our skin. Sunflower oil has an emollient effect that helps to improve the natural skin barrier function. In addition, sunflower oil has anti-inflammatory properties that calm and soothes irritated skin.

Avocado oil is a cold-pressed oil that has many benefits for the skin. It has potent antioxidants that help protect from free radicals and has anti-inflammatory properties. Polyglyceryl-3 methylglucose distearate is just a very difficult name for an emulsifier made of raw plant-based materials. It is used in skincare products to help mix the oily and watery parts of the formula.

Potassium sorbate is a mild preservative used in cosmetics and food products.
It helps prevent the growth of bacteria, yeast and fungus in products. Potassium sorbate is the potassium salt of sorbic acid and is almost always produced synthetically. It is one of our few ingredients that is not plant based, although the synthetic version is a nature-identical compound.

Xanthan gum is a very common ingredient used in both food and skincare, and is used as a thickener or to bind ingredients together. It is a very safe ingredient and the most used thickener in natural skincare as it is naturally derived and does not cause any irritation or sensitivity.

Trehalose is a plant sugar that has water-binding and hydrating properties. It is a humectant that helps protect skin and hair from dehydration.

In Asia, they found out long ago that the fermentation of ingredients derived from plants is good for internal and external health, and is widely used in food and cosmetics. Saccharomyces Ferment is made by fermenting and filtering yeast and is high in minerals, amino acids, vitamins and beta glucans (polysaccharide sugars found in mushrooms, plants, algae, yeasts, and oats).
