FAQs | Products & Ingredients

Are your products ‘natural’ or ‘organic’?

The Karmamama product collection is not exclusively organic or natural; rather, our products are formulated using the best combination of high-quality natural, naturally derived and laboratory-made responsible alternative ingredients.  Of course, we thrive to be as natural as possible; over 98,5% of the ingredients in our products are natural or naturally-derived. All of our key natural actives follow a strict traceability from their sourcing to our finished products.

It is important to note that all of our products are free of:

  • Sulfates (SLS/SLE)
  • Parabens
  • synthetic fragrances
  • Petroleum derivatives or mineral oil
  • Phthalates
  • Nanoparticles
  • Triclosan
  • Formaldehyde or formaldehyde carriers
  • TEA, PEG, DEA
  • Animal testing or by-products
While many of our formulas contain ingredients sourced from plants grown organically, they also commonly contain ingredients grown by local farmers using non-organic techniques as well as substances developed by our team of experts in Thailand. Our primary objective is to ensure that our products are made from premium quality ingredients.

We understand the benefits that organic and biodynamic farming have on health and the land, but we are practical about how realistic it would be for us to use only organic ingredients. Sometimes they are not available, sometimes there is not enough of a particular ingredient.
Please note that any company that labels itself organic without explaining exactly what they mean, can label their goods organic if they contain only a small percentage of organic ingredients.

Are your products nut-free?

Many of our products are free of nuts or nut oils. However, we cannot guarantee that our products were made in a nut-free facility. As always, we encourage our customers who have allergies to consult a doctor before using any product.

Are your products gluten free?

Most of our products are formulated without ingredients that may contain gluten, a protein found primarily in wheat and other grains. Our products cannot be certified as gluten-free because our current manufacturing partners do not have certified gluten-free facilities.

As always, before using any product, we encourage customers who have allergies to consult a doctor.

Are your products preservative free?

No, not all products. We chose options that are effective in very small concentrations, and we use different preservatives for different products because of performance.

Companies must use preservatives in any cosmetic product that contains water or aloe vera to ensure that potentially harmful microbial growth (i.e. bacteria, yeast, or fungus) does not occur. Products without water or aloe vera, like our body oils or diaper balm, do not need preservatives.

Increasingly, many cosmetic companies state that they are “preservative free,” which is an unregulated term. If there is water or aloe vera in the product and they are making this claim, it is likely that one of the following is occurring:

  1. they suggest that you keep products refrigerated and you use them quickly
  2. they are risking bacteria/mold/yeast growth
  3. they are using pre-preserved raw ingredients/

What preservatives do you use?

Here is the list of preservatives that we are using in our products, all of our preservatives are naturally derived.

  • Potassium sorbate
  • Sodium benzoate

The use percentage ranges from 0.04 % to 0,8 % depending on the ingredient and product.

Are your products hypoallergenic?

Karmamama products have been designed and formulated to not clog pores or irritate the skin but still be effective on the most sensitive skin. Karmamama will not state “hypoallergenic” due to the fact that “hypoallergenicity” is an unregulated marketing claim designed by certain large mass brands. There are no federal standards or definitions that govern the use of the term “hypoallergenic”.

Where are your products manufactured?

Our products are proudly manufactured in Thailand.

Are your products tested on animals?

Don’t worry Mama! At Karmamama, we believe strongly in providing products without the use of animal testing. We adhere to the strict requirements of the European Cosmetics Directive (76/768 ECC) and the European Commission Regulation (1223/2009), which prohibits the commissioning and testing on animals, of products and ingredients, for the purpose of developing new skin care products.
Before we consider entry into a new country we extensively review the regulatory requirements to ensure that compulsory animal testing on our products is not required.

We work closely with our ingredient suppliers to ensure they are aware of our company values and policies. We continue to adhere to the strict requirements of global cosmetic regulations regarding animal testing, with utmost respect for our customers and environment.

Are your products vegan?

We do not use any ingredients obtained or derived from dead animal material in any of our products.

Our diaper balm contains beeswax for its natural hydrating, anti-bacterial and restorative properties. All of our products without beeswax are vegan.

Do Karmamama products have an expiry date?

Karmamama uses only the highest quality natural ingredients in our formulations. Most of our products are made exclusively with naturally stable oils and butters that have a shelf life of a year or longer.
We recommend that you use our products within 12 months of purchase to ensure that your products are fresh, and that the herbs and essential oils are most effective. We use 12 months as a general guideline; however, use your best judgement. If the product takes on an unusual odor or appearance, discontinue use.
You can maximize the shelf life of your product by following a few tips. Avoid contamination – always use clean, dry hands or a small spoon, especially when touching product in an open container. And always keep products in a cool, dry place, out of heat and direct sunlight.

How should I store my Karmamama products?

We recommend you keep your products in a cool place away from direct light, or better yet. This advice applies for all Karmamama products, regardless of whether they are contained in plastic or glass.

It is best to use clean hands when dipping into jars, or to use a teaspoon or small spatula to scoop out product for use.

What do I do when the products cause a reaction?

Firstly, please do not ingest any of our products. It won’t cause any major damage, but it’s not very good for you to eat cosmetics. Our products are natural and have been dermatologically tested and approved. Nevertheless, everyone has different skin and allergies can occur. In cases like this, we advise you to stop using the product immediately.
